How do we capture the self in an image? This course will explore how to make art using ourselves as subject matter, be it from direct observation, photography or other mediums. The aim is to discover ways of generating images by examining different aspects of ourselves; through ideas of identity, gender, social and familial connections, memories, aspirations, through use of costume and allusion, or simply our own bodies. Starting with the technical aspects of painting and the complications and solutions that exist, from which students can begin to adopt the approaches that best suit them individually they will gain an understanding of the self portrait genre.

Roxana Halls has held several successful solo exhibitions including at the National Theatre and on Cork St. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions such as the B.P. Portrait Award on five occasions, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait exhibition, also in many group shows, art competitions and art fairs. Her awards include the Villiers David Prize & the Discerning Eye’s Founder’s Purchase Prize.
