This course starts by giving students a structured approach to figure modelling in clay; the course then moves on to to give students the opportunity to explore form, materials and processes as a means of sculptural expression, using the model for those interested in figurative work, or without the model for those wishing to develop abstract or material based compositions. For students unsure about which materials, processes and ideas to explore, there are a number of structured exercises, some working from the life model enabling students to explore different materials and processes. The course aims to teach students to use the human form to express, energy or character and to develop an individual approach to their sculpture. This in turn leads to a more developed understanding of how to use composition and form expressively. As the course progresses students are free to create sculptures at any scale and in the material of their choice. This programme is an important opportunity to develop the skills to create sculptures that have expression as well as being technically accomplished.
