This two day portrait course will offer an opportunity for intensive study under the tuition of Nathan Ford. The course will include a demonstration on the first morning, followed by an attempt to analyse the act of looking. Through drawing and painting studies students will be encouraged to strip the process down and think about how a portrait can be reduced to its essential parts. The aim of this course is to work small scale but intensely and to give students the practical skills and confidence to paint a portrait from life in a single sitting using oil paints and a pencil.

Nathan Ford is a professional artist concerned with painting more personal portraits, as a result he does not accept portrait commissions. Ford tutors courses only on rare occasions. He is a prize winner five times of the Winsor & Newton Young Artist Award, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Mall Galleries, London: 1st Prize: 2010, 2003, 2001. In 2011 he won the Visitors Choice 2nd Prize at BP Portrait Awards, National Portrait Gallery, London. At the National Art Open in 2013 he won the Towry Regional Prize, London and Chichester and at Art in Action he won 1st prize 2014 in Best of the Best and 2nd prize 2015. Recently Ford has been shortlisted for The Ruskin Prize 2016, Walsall and London.
