This course introduces key topics in modern art from the beginning of the twentieth century through to the second world war, including cubism, abstract art and modernism outside Western Europe. A range of different styles and mediums will be discussed and major artists, movements and styles will be introduced at a beginner’s level. Students will be provided with the historical background to the emergence of modernism and will also be led through a variety of engaging exercises to help them begin to develop visual and critical skills. There is no expectation that students should have any background knowledge and it is designed for general interest rather than academic study.
