Saturday 5 May 2018 7:30 p.m. Crypt Concert Room A Song of Thanksgiving Soloist: Julia Smith, Speaker: Peter McColgan A creative mix of music and poetry to reflect, broadly, on the end of WWI. Shakespeare’s Henry V Agincourt speech; the contemporary Agincourt Carol; Walton’s two string pieces for Sir Laurence Olivier’s celebrated film of the play. Haydn’s Military Symphony is a response to the rise of Napoleon and the devastating effect it had on continental Europe. Then comes a group of tender lullabies before Vaughan Williams’ A Song of Thanksgiving. A soldier in WWI, he wrote this to commemorate the end of WWII.
